FOOD aid from Ross-shire’s Blythswood Care charity has reached hundreds of families affected by floods in Serbia.

Blythswood’s head of retail Alan Swanson visited the area and helped Blythswood’s partner charity in Serbia, Love Your Neighbour, deliver flour and other essential food items.

"People’s lives have been turned upside down," said Alan. "Some had the contents of their homes outside to dry.

"One 79-year-old lady’s home had been completely inundated and she had nowhere to sleep. Our partners arranged to get her a new bed."

Last month, Evanton-based charity Blythswood put out an urgent appeal for donations to help the Serbian flood victims.

More than two million people in the Balkans have been affected by the worst floods since records began 120 years ago. Months of rain fell in a few days during May and there were fatalities

The relief project is expected to continue for several weeks.
