HIGHLAND MPs have slammed Prime Minister Boris Johnson's defence of aide Dominic Cummings who is facing calls to resign over claims he broke the Government's own lockdown rules.

Far North Liberal Democrat MP Jamie Stone, who constituency includes much of Easter Ross, said: "In my nearly three years as an MP I have never had so many emails about one thing on a Sunday night.‬ ‪People in the Highlands are absolutely outraged by Boris Johnson’s defence of Cummings.‬ ‪It is a disgrace that stinks in the nostrils of all decent people.‬ Shame on Boris. Shame on Cummings. Shame on this rotten Government."

Ross, Skye and Lochaber MP Ian Blackford, who leads the SNP at Westminster, said: "Dominic Cummings has broken the guidelines that were put in place. We cannot have a Downing Street cover up otherwise the entire UK Government's public health message for this crisis is at risk. This is a matter of supreme importance for the public well-being. He must go and the Prime Minister must answer the many questions that remain."

His fellow SNP MP Drew Hendry (Inverness, Nairn. Badenoch and Lochaber) said: "When everyone else has to obey the rules, why should Mr Cummings be any different?"

The Prime Minister said yesterday he believed Mr Cummings had "no alternative" but to make the journey to Durham at the end of March for childcare "when both he and his wife were about to be incapacitated by coronavirus". He said he had acted "responsibly and legally and with integrity".
