A COVID hotspot in Ross-shire has recorded more than in one in five of all Highland infections of recent days - after its total increased to 114.

The neighbouring Easter Ross towns of Alness and Invergordon recorded 72 and 42 cases respectively in the seven days up to January 7.

They represented 22 per cent of the Highland Council area’s 507 cases over the same seven day period.

The update came amid reports of two Covid clusters at Invergordon care homes on Sunday.

It is not known how many of the two homes’ 19 known cases are part of the most recent seven-day update for Invergordon, or whether some or all are still to be added to that total – which typically lags two to three days behind the daily updates for the wider NHS Highland health board region.

Meanwhile, Highland Council’s wider seven-day Covid infection rate remained almost static during the most recent update on Sunday afternoon. In the seven days up to January 7 the local authority area had a positivity rate of 215 cases per 100,000 people. This was only marginally higher than the 212 recorded the previous day – and down from the 241.7 reported the day before.
