The man has already served a prison sentence for a similar previous offence.

Christopher Murray (37), of Westford, Alness, pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified along with an associated charge of driving without insurance.

The court heard that both of the offences were committed by Murray while he was driving on the A832 at Black Isle Road, Muir of Ord on August 23.

Defence solicitor John MacColl admitted to Sheriff Ian Cruickshank that his client was in a “precarious” position in terms of sentencing given his previous record for analogous offences.

He had served a jail sentence in 2019.

“Custody will be uppermost in the court’s mind but I make a plea for his release on bail primarily because his first child is due to be born in the next few weeks,” Mr MacColl told the court.

Despite this plea on his behalf Sheriff Cruickshank refused to grant Murray bail and ordered him to be remanded in custody until sentencing on September 23.

He called for both a background report and a restriction of liberty order assessment to be prepared ahead of the hearing for sentence.

Sheriff Cruickshank told Murray: “You have driven on numerous occasions while disqualified and bail is not appropriate.”
