IT may be the water of life, but whisky can kill your bank balance – at least it can if you happen to snap up exceptionally rare Ross-shire bottles for more than £250,000 apiece.

Two bottles of 62-year-old Dalmore have utterly shattered their estimated sale price at auction in London today.

One bottle – dubbed the Mackenzie – and another called The Cromarty each fetched £266,200 when they went under he hammer in a digital auction at Sotheby's today. The sum more than doubled their pre-auction estimates of between £75,000 and £100,000 apiece.

And the pricey tipple from the Alness-based distillery wasn't the only Highland whisky to go under the hammer today.

A 50-year-old bottle of Macallan set one happy punter back a cool £84,700, while a 40-year-old Brora bottle netted £26,620. Several others went for four-figure sums.
