Raigmore Hospital ICU receives ‘emotional’ donation in memory of brave Black Isle lad
A “SUPER emotional” donation has been made to Raigmore’s ICU in memory of a brave Black Isle lad who fought a debilitating disease and has been dearly missed since his death last year.
North Kessock lad, Reece Mitchell, touched the hearts of thousands before his death in May 2024, at just 10 years old. He was diagnosed with the CLN2 variant of Batten disease at age five.
His mum, Donna Mitchell, has now donated resources to Raigmore Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU), which had previously been bought for Reece.
“On Sunday we went back to the ICU to hand in all the stuff that we fundraised to purchase in Reece’s name,” said Donna. “I will not lie, I felt super emotional walking back in, but it was so lovely to see some of the staff who cared for my boy with such compassion, kindness. They gave Reece the respect and dignity he deserved — we couldn’t have wished for better care.
”These guys are amazing and do such a wonderful job supporting families during the most difficult times, so our wee contribution will help make patients and their families times in ICU a little easier.”
During his short life, Reece raised public awareness of the cruel condition, the needs of sufferers and the importance of cutting edge research.
Donna continued: “A huge thanks to Vic and Ciaran for coming with us and helping get all the stuff up, as that was a mission and a half.
“We will never forget the kindness shown to us by the staff in ICU and how they made what was such a traumatic time that little bit easier by being so supportive. I will always make sure that we remember Reece always.”
An NHS Highland spokesperson said: “NHS Highland would like to convey its heartfelt appreciation to Donna and her family for their fundraising efforts and the generous resources donated in memory of her late son, Reece, to Raigmore Hospital ICU. We are truly grateful for all contributions made by patients and their families, often given in memory of a loved one or as a "forever thank you’ for the care and services provided.
“The ICU staff are profoundly touched by Donna's thoughtfulness and generosity, which will positively impact other patients and their families.
“We would like to take this moment to express our sincere gratitude to Donna once again.”
