THE proposed reopening of a rail stop serving a fast-growing Easter Ross community has stirred excitement amongst locals.

Transport partnership Hitrans is carrying out a feasibility study into the proposal for Evanton, where significant house-building – and concerns over the bus service – has fuelled calls for better public transport links.

One local observer, George Glaister, believes the feasibility has long since been demonstrated, adding: “It is ridiculous that a train comes through the village, and there is a train station – but that people have to drive to another station to pick it up.”

Following our coverage, others have now chipped in to the discussion on social media.

Nikki Masterton stated: “It would be brilliant as my partner has to cycle to Alness every day apart from a Sunday to then get the train to Tain, and same for the way back.”

Paul White posted: “Buses to Evanton are a shadow of what they used to be, and the train is right on the doorstep. This makes sense with the planned village growth. It will add property value but it will also cause the village to grow further as it becomes more attractive as a commuter residence for Inverness.”

Sean Toye observed: “Having a train station and stop for Evanton is a great idea. There is a financial implication but I believe the pros would outweigh the cons, if the correct discussions and needs were brought to the higher-ups before construction and planning started. “Disabled and elderly would need to benefit from this service, free/heavily discounted travel would be needed. A properly thought out car park would need to be implemented also. We have a large amount of housing about to be built and the buses will not suffice.”

Kirstin Lavery said: “I think it would be a fantastic idea. They’ve cut the buses so really need to either put them on again or think about doing this. Especially with all the new homes they’re building.”

Keith Bauer said it would be a “valuable asset for the village”.

Lisa Robertson had doubts about the financial viability.

She said many getting the bus from Evanton are able to use a bus pass but would have to pay something for the train. A car park could also present issues.

She said: “It’s a nice idea but the practise just doesn’t work in Evanton.”

Mandy Macleman stated: “Definitely great for the village – regarding car parking – most people could walk to the station and the Highland Rail Card saves 50 per cent on fares.”

A Network Rail spokesman said: “We are always open to exploring new developments where they meet a clear passenger need and have a strong business case.”
