Highland Council is urging people to get involved in a public consultation.

Communities across the Inner Moray Firth area are being invited to have their say as part of a consultation to help shape future development.

The Inner Moray Firth Local Development Plan covers the Inverness area, Nairnshire and the eastern part of Ross and Cromarty.

Highland Council has now published the main issues report, setting out its view on how and where the area should grow.

It is asking for people’s views on nine main issues affecting the area, including climate change, economic recovery and delivering affordable housing.

The council is also seeking people’s views on development site options, locally important green spaces and other community priorities for every main settlement.

Malcolm MacLeod, executive chief officer for infrastructure and the environment, is encouraging as many people as possible to get involved.

"The pandemic has made us all more aware of our local neighbourhood and how we travel around it whether it’s finding somewhere convenient and attractive to exercise, to take the dog or for where our children can play safely," he said.

"For those working or shopping from home, a good internet connection has become vital.

"Similarly, the need to have closer access to health facilities and care is also influencing where people wish to live."

He said most people were aware of planning applications, particularly if a development was next door to them, but many did not realise that the ‘in principle’ decision on whether and what type of building takes place on that land may have already been made.

The fastest and easiest way to read and comment on the main issues report is online, via www.highland.gov.uk/imf.

Comments can be made up to 5pm on April 1.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic restrictions, the council’s planning team is unable to hold face-to-face consultation events but has prepared short videos which can be seen via its website.

Community groups and organisations wishing an online meeting with officers should email imfldp@highland.gov.uk
