A ROSS port is celebrating after it made it through to the final shortlists in four UK awards.

The Port of Cromarty Firth is up for four titles in this year's Maritime UK Awards, and is up against some of the biggest names in the sector.

And it will find out next month if it has been successful in the Coastal Powerhoue, Business of the Year, Clean Maritime Enabler and Maritime Professional of the Year awards.

Bob Buskie, the port's chief executive, is in the running for the latter honour. He said the awards cap an "extremely exciting time" for the port.

“We are delighted to be shortlisted in four categories for this year’s Maritime UK Awards, it is an honour to be considered alongside some of the largest ports in the UK.

"This is testament to the hard work of our staff during what has been an exceptionally difficult year for everyone.

“This is an extremely exciting time for the Port, the investments we have made in preparation for the offshore wind sector are already paying off.

"The ScotWind leasing round will open up new opportunities and create sustainable employment locally. We are also leading the Opportunity Cromarty Firth bid for free port status which could transform, not only the port but the surrounding area, and the wider Highlands economy.

“We feel a real sense of duty to do the best we can not only to protect jobs, but to grow jobs. Looking to the future we see an incredible opportunity for local people, with the potential for the free port and renewable energy projects to provide valuable and sustainable employment for generations.”

The awards, which will be given to individuals as well as businesses, charities, colleges and universities, focus on a wide range of areas including business growth, innovation, sustainability and diversity. Several new categories this year are focused on green growth and decarbonisation.

Harry Theochari, Chairman of Maritime UK, said: “Across all 14 categories we can see some genuinely world-beating products, services, and operators. I’m particularly pleased to see some fantastic projects being showcased in the new Clean Maritime categories. Given the importance the sector places on getting to net zero, it is important that we celebrate the progress made on that journey and connect people together so that they can achieve more than on their own. These awards help do just that.

"The quality of entries this year is testament to the strength and commitment of our maritime sector to be world-class despite the most challenging of circumstances.”

The winners will be announced at a live-streamed event across the world from Plymouth on November 12.
