AN eight-year-old Ross-shire lass moved by the tragically early death of a granny she never got to meet will this weekend take on a poignant fundraising challenge with her dad.

Poppy Weatherall took it on herself to raise funds for Cancer Research UK after the death of her grandmother, Liz, at the age of just 52.

The determined youngster, from Strathpeffer, has already smashed her original £100 target by over 1300 per cent with a total currently standing at £1380.

She said of Liz, who had pancreatic cancer: "I never got to meet her, however I hear she was a lovely lady. I don’t want any other children not to know their grannies so I thought I would plan a fundraiser."

She writes that people around the world are affected by the cancer crisis and plans running a 10K with dad Jack from Maryburgh to Strathpeffer, adding: "Please donate what you can. Every penny counts."

People have taken her at her word ahead of the March 18 run and left dozens of good wishes on her fundraising page.

Dad Jack said: "I lost my mum to pancreatic cancer. We are a pretty get up and go family and I suppose it filters down to the next generation. She wanted to do something so other little girls and boys not to have the opportunity to see their grandparents. For an eight-year-old, I'm very proud of her."

Cheering on will be brother Hamish (7) and sister Olivia (2).

Poppy has already been up Ben Wyvis on an earlier fundraiser and now seems to have it in her blood to help when she can.
