POLICE in the Highlands have urged the public to be more considerate after a spate of reports of littering and reckless behaviour.

Their comments follow reports of campers and visitors leaving rubbish and disposable barbecues at sites everywhere from Applecross in Wester Ross to the Cairngorms.

Earlier this week, Cairngorms National Park CEO Grant Moir took to Twitter to slam some of the reckless behaviour that had been observed.

"The scenes around Loch Morlich in the Cairngorms National Park this weekend were completely unacceptable," he said. "Many people out enjoying the park but a minority causing real trouble with fires, litter and vandalism. Please behave responsibly. It’s your countryside, look after it!"

Following these and other public concerns, Police Scotland officers reminded people to be respectful towards the communities and countryside in which they find themselves.

And they also urged people to take their litter home.

Commenting via their Northern Police twitter feed, a spokesman for the force said: "Please be considerate if visiting the Highlands and Islands – don't leave litter and if you are camping then leave things as you found them.

"Follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code."
