IT is a firm fixture in the calendar for a growing band of outdoor-loving charity supporters from across the Highlands and beyond.

The Great Wilderness Challenge, which would have been staged today, has raised over £4million for charity since it was first run in 1986 amid stunning scenery in Wester Ross.

What was meant to be a one-off developed into what has become the biggest single-day fundraiser in Ross-shire.

Highland Hospice alone has benefited to the tune of around £1.3million over 34 years as additional routes to suit all abilities have been added.

With organisers sending out good wishes to everyone within the Great Wilderness Challenge community today - this year's event fell prey to the ongoing coronavirus crisis – it was confirmed that entries for next year have now opened, giving those feeling a twinge of sadness today something to look forward to.

The date for diary? Saturday, August 14, 2021.

Meantime, we have pulled together some pictures from the archive – amongst them some shots by Gary Williamson – which get across the joy of participating and the difference those cheques make to a wide variety of good causes.
