EDEN Court has hosted its first live performance in 219 days.

A socially distanced crowd was entertained by Scottish Opera at the weekend and although coronavirus safety measures meant the shows had to be held outdoors, the audience basked in glorious sunshine on both Saturday and Sunday.

Part of a pop-up tour by Scottish Opera, the performance featured specially re-written 25-minute versions of Mozart’s Don Giovanni and Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Gondoliers as well as a new work, The Song of the Clyde, by Scottish composer Karen MacIver.

Eden Court chief executive James Mackenzie-Blackman admitted he was left quite emotional by the return of live theatre to the venue.

He tweeted afterwards: “Delighted, grateful, strange, new. The show was marvellous.

“What a year it’s been.”

Audience members also took to social media to share their own appreciation.

Andie MacRae said: “We were there and it was brilliant. Thanks to all the cast and crew.

LJ Scott said: “What a beautiful day it was for this! The universe clearly has Eden Court’s back – it knows how much our theatre is loved and needed.”

David Hogg said: “We were there today and what a fantastic feeling it was to be at a ‘live’ performance again and in such glorious, hot sunny weather.

“A huge thanks to everyone involved in staging this unique production and giving us (and all others there) back the ‘feelgood factor’ again!”
