RESIDENTS at a Ross-shire care home gave their own heartfelt tribute to Captain Sir Tom Moore following his death after testing positive for coronavirus at the age of 100.

The centenarian raised almost £33m for NHS charities by walking laps of his garden, and has been described as an inspiration to the nation during some of its darkest hours.

Some of the residents at Innis Mhor Care Home in Tain paid their own tribute to him by clapping in his memory.

The home posted: "Rip Captain Sir Tom! Some of the residents giving him a clap tonight."

The Queen last week led tributes to Capt Sir Tom "recognising the inspiration he provided for the whole nation and others across the world".

His fundraising effort, with the help of walking aids, touched the hearts of millions and inspired many others to do what they could to acknowledge the efforts of those at the frontline of the battle against Covid-19.

Amongst them was Margaret Payne (90) who climbed the equivalent of a mountain on the stairs of her Sutherland home.

The great-grandmother-of-four Margaret embarked on a challenge to climb 2398ft - the equivalent height of her beloved Suilven - to repay the health service for the care it gave her late husband Jim, who died on Christmas day last year.

She raised more than £434,000 for the NHS, Highland Hospice and RNLI.
