WESTER Ross environmental campaigners who have put their village on the global map got their sleeves rolled up again with another beach clean.

The efforts of Ullapool Sea Savers have been acknolwedged in recent weeks on BBC's Autumn Watch and by Prince William in a special documentary being screened around the world.

They were back out again helping Scottish Wildlife Trust - Living Seas at a beach clean at Altandhu by Achiltibuie at the weekend. Lots of volunteers managed to clean up 490 kg of rubbish, mostly bits of twine and rope but also some fish farm pipes.

Three members – Poppy, Caillin and Maia – managed to dig one pipe out of the beach by hand. Living Seas have put a new beach clean station there to allow people to do smaller cleans when they visit and will hopefully keep the quantities down and help keep the beach cleaner.

Heather Mcdonald said: "Fantastic effort once again. Having spent an amazing week up there in September I can fully appreciate why you all feel so passionate about your local environment. It is just so sad so many folk do not appreciate our wonderful surroundings, and wildlife. Well done to everybody we will be back next year."

Lesley Murphy: "Great endeavour! Beach clean stations such a good idea too."

Sue Stockton: "Brilliant work! Be always proud of what you do and...for your outstanding Autumn Watch contribution for us to learn from."

Michelle Vickers: "Well done, awesome effort...just so sad that it's required."
