Describing the crash as "serious", they warned that the road "is likely to remain closed for some time".

They added that as well as heavy traffic on the A9, there was also queueing traffic on the A96 on the approach to the Raigmore Interchange.Motorists have been told by police that they will have to safely turn around in a bid to clear the road.

One driver said: "I'm not sure what has happened but it must be serious because it will take hours to turn everyone around, including HGVs, and somehow get us off the A9 safely."
