Education Secretary John Swinney has said exams will be scrapped for school pupils this year as schools get set to close for the foreseeable future.
It is believed to be the first time in history that such a measure has been taken by education authorities in Scotand.
Mr Swinney said the move, following similar measures already announced for England and Wales, was "unprecedented" and a measure of the gravity of the coronavirus situation.
However, he said, he believes measures can be put in place to allow those in schools or colleges to not be unduly disadvantaged by the move.
