NHS Highland region detects 19 new cases of Covid-19; health board area's tally increases to 921 as Scotland passes 50,000 cases

NINETEEN new Covid-19 cases have been reported across the NHS Highland health board area in the past day.

The increase has taken the region's cumulative number of cases since the start of the pandemic to 921.

The rise came as Scotland's overall number of cumulative cases broke the 50,000 mark, with a further 1739 positive tests taking the tally to 50,903.

Some 873 people were receiving treatment in Scotland's hospitals for Covid-19 yesterday, up from 49 the day before.

Of those, 73 were in intensive care; an increase of three in the past 24 hours.

And there were 28 further deaths among people who had tested positive for the virus – the single largest daily death total in Scotland since May 21.

Elsewhere in the north of Scotland, NHS Eileanan Siar reported two new cases (for a cumulative total of 64) and NHS Orkney added one more positive test (for 28). NHS Shetland recorded no new cases in the past 24 hours.

Thirty-nine new positive tests were recorded in the NHS Grampian area, which has now detected 3055 confirmed cases since the outbreak began.

And NHS Tayside saw 85 new infections for an overall total of 3424.
