FORESTRY student Murray Harper has been recognised by the industry as being top of the tree.

Mr Harper, who is studying at Inverness College UHI, was named this year’s top forestry student in further education by the Royal Scottish Forestry Society.

Previously a time-served boat builder, Mr Harper was presented with his £100 prize money and certificate by the society’s north region chairman Rod Pimm.

"Murray has shown considerable commitment managing studies, work and family life this past year," Mr Pimm said. "It’s so important to have enthusiastic and able people like him joining the forest sector."

Mr Harper, who divides his time between Inverness and his home in Oban, said he had enjoyed his first year at college especially the practical work, and winning the award had been a nice surprise.

"I have already put the money towards new chainsaw boots," he said.

"I would like to thank my partner Adele who has been working and looked after kids and house while I am away, and also my pal Tim who was kind enough to put me up during term time. Without these two people it would not have been possible."
