An advance planning notice has been submitted for the new Tain 3 – 18 campus marking a major milestone on the road to delivering the long-awaited new school.

The notice is the formal beginning of the planning process for the estimated £50 million campus at Craighill just off the A9 which is expected to be completed by August 2024.

The current notice is for the “erection of replacement community campus, incorporating nursery, primary and secondary educational provision for Tain and surrounding catchment.”

It will also include the “formation of vehicular access, associated car parking, drop off, playgrounds, soft landscaping, fencing, multi use games area pitches, sports pitches, lighting, CCTV cameras, bin store, sub-station and associated footpaths.”

The application was made by the Highland Council and at this stage it came before the North Planning Committee for any comments from members.

It contains some basic details about what the development will be with the next step being a full application – normally expected after around 12 weeks.

Councillors are asked not to make a judgement of any kind on the future application but to offer their thoughts on the information as it stands.

Cllr Alasdair Rhind said: “What I’d say concerns the public consultation or the lack of it – this is a major application for our community and it has only been done online so far which is not the best way.

“But I am pleased to see the applicant saying that they will have a public event in August 2021 and I would just ask that we as the planning authority keep them to the word on that.”

The first plans were released just over a month ago with some online consultations staged by the council after that.
