NC500 locals disgusted by ‘vile’ human waste left in beauty spot layby
NC500 locals were disgusted after discovering “vile” human waste left behind on an A835 layby.
The North Coast 500 (NC500) showcases some of the most beautiful scenery in Scotland, if not the UK. However in recent years, the tourist route has found notoriety for over-tourism, resulting in issues such as irresponsible disposal of human waste.
To highlight these instances of over-tourism, Facebook pages such as NC500 The Dirty Truth were set up.
On August 18, an anonymous participant on this page shared a clip exposing the mess left behind on an A835 layby opposite Corrieshalloch Gorge. The video shows human waste, tissues and litter left behind in a former layby toilet, which is now boarded off.
The A835 trunk road leading from Ullapool to Tore, while technically not on the NC500, has proven to be a highly popular ‘alternative route’ for tourists.
Many took to the video’s comment section to share their thoughts.
Katharine Huggett simply said: “This is an environmental health hazard.”
Joe MacReany stated: “Only vile creatures would do this!”
Trunk road maintenance firm Bear Scotland and the Highland Council have been contacted for comment.
