Elgin earn Scottish Cup trip to Ibrox

By Craig Christie

ROSS Jack says Elgin City have hit the jackpot by drawing Rangers at Ibrox in the William Hill Scottish Cup.

Monday’s fourth round paired City a money spinning trip to meet the Glasgow giants in a tie likely to be played on December 1 or 2.

It means Elgin will now play Rangers at least five times this season, including a league meeting at Borough Briggs a week before the cup clash.

"It’s an absolute jackpot for the club," Ross said shortly after the draw was made. "The players and the directors will all be delighted.

"Obviously from the financial side of things it’s a great draw, but the prestige of playing at Ibrox again will be fantastic for the team."

City lost 5-1 in a Division 3 match at Ibrox in September after taking a shock lead through Jamie Duff’s wonder goal.

They meet again in Elgin on Sunday, November 25 in a match being screen live on ESPN, before clashing for a third occasion in the cup the following weekend.

"I think it could be the biggest crowd of the round, and it’s great reward for the supporters who cheered us to a great win over East Fife on Saturday."

Elgin discovered their fate at Hampden on Monday afternoon when former Celtic striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink made the draw along with SFA commercial director Kenny MacLeod and Lindsay Wright, a representative of sponsors William Hill.

The draw threw up some tasty ties, not least with last year’s finalists Hibs and Hearts meeting at Easter Road.

Highland rivals Ross County and Inverness Caley Thistle have been paired together, along with another all-SPL tie between Aberdeen and Motherwell.

Buckie Thistle’s conquerors on Saturday, Turriff United earned a home draw against Albion Rovers or Morton, while fellow Highland League side Inverurie Locos could visit Celtic if they overcome Arbroath in a replay.
