Before returning to school yesterday, some Durness Golf Club Junior members took the chance to open the newly created Six Hole Course.

The course had been set up by greenkeepers Jack Macpherson and Martin Mackay with assistance from member Willie Mackay; special cards have been designed by member John Avison and the official opening was performed by Junior Captain Mary McCowan when she hit the opening shot off the first tee.

Players then proceeded to play the new course, so current Course Record Holders are: Girls – Mary McCowan (27); Boys – Harry Hird (34); Ladies – Lucy Mackay (25); Men – Martin Mackay (22). They all received appropriate certificates, while a special prize was awarded to Harry’s father Nic who only took up the game three weeks ago and got round in 30 shots.

All these improvements have been made possible with a grant of £1,964 received from the Big Lottery Fund last year. The existing putting green has also been upgraded and a small green with adjacent practise bunker has been created. These are still maturing and won’t be in use until lambing time is over and the sheep have left the course for the summer season.

Junior evenings start this week for the season on Thursdays from 5.30pm.
