THE mystery discovery of Covid-19 test samples on the side of the A9 needs to be fully investigated and locals must be kept informed, say a local MP.

Jamie Stone, who represents Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross, was left stunned after news of the shock find broke last night.

Taking to Twitter he said it was "really important" that answers are found swiftly as to how the bag of potentially dangerous medical tests was found on the A9 close to Tain, near the Dornoch junction.

"I honestly don’t know where to start," he said. "How does a random bag of tests land up on the roadside? In my hometown of all places!

"Really important we get answers on this ASAP – investigation needs to be transparent and communicated to locals.

"Seriously can’t get over this!"

NHS Highland issued a statement last night, which confirmed the surprise discovery and said that investigations were under way.

A spokeswoman said: “We can confirm that samples being transported from Caithness General Hospital in Wick to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness were found on the A9 near Tain.

“The samples were handed in to the local police station and are now with the laboratory team at Raigmore.”

She added: “We are investigating how this could have happened to ensure this will not happen again and would like to reassure everyone that at no point was there a danger to the public from these samples.

“They were packed properly and remained intact.”
