The closure of a prominent fuel stop on the A9 is only "temporary" and the community will be kept informed when it reopens, a supermarket has promised.

Regular users of the petrol station at Asda, next to the Tain bypass, have had to look to one of the town's two other fuel stops recently as the supermarket's forecourt has been closed.

The pumps have been coned off for at least two weeks continuously - something which usually only happens when deliveries of fuel are imminent - sparking head scratching from some as to what is going on.

Asda has now clarified that the closure is due to "planned maintenance" but did not elaborate further.

However, it has confirmed that the closure is only temporary and that customers will be informed when it is due to reopen.

A spokesperson said: "We've temporarily closed our Tain petrol station while it undergoes planned maintenance.

"We'll let the community know when the site re-opens. In the meantime, we’d like to reassure customers that the store itself remains open and customers looking to fill up can do so by visiting one of our nearby stations, including our Inverness and Elgin sites, both of which remain open."
