DELIGHTED museum staff are overjoyed after their site proved popular with the public once lockdown restrictions were eased.

Gairloch Museum's curator, Karen Buchanan, said the site had been "quite busy" despite the wider Covid-19 hit to the economy, and said that visiting slots had been "fully occupied" on most days.

“We are very glad to have been able to open Gairloch Museum so soon after the Scottish Government permitted it," she said. "We have reopened into the peak tourist season in the Highlands and we have been quite busy.

"On most days, our visiting slots have been fully occupied. I am delighted we were able to open before the Scottish school holidays finished and it has been lovely to see families in enjoying the museum again.”

She was speaking after Museums Galleries Scotland announced that many sites had reopened across Scotland and urged families to check out the various collections.

And it has launched an interactive map to showcase the sites which have reopened and the measures in place to boost the public's safety amid the ongoing pandemic.

Lucy Casot, CEO, Museums Galleries Scotland added: “As we emerge from lockdown many of us will be planning a return visit to our favourite museum or gallery. With so many of our museums and galleries across Scotland now able to open, there’s so much to choose from, many with wonderful outdoor spaces to enjoy with the whole family.

“It’s not just a fun day out, museums and galleries have a positive impact on our social wellbeing as well as the local economy so we are urging everyone to make a point of visiting their favourite museum or gallery. Additionally, with many of us staycationing this year, it is a wonderful opportunity to discover more of Scotland’s inspiring museums and galleries.”

The new interactive map shows which venues are open and can be accessed online here. This is updated on a daily basis as museums reopen. Before you go, check the museums websites for opening times and safety measures.

The new interactive map is part of Museums Galleries Scotland's #MuseumsAreGo campaign, showing which venues are open.

All of Gairloch Museum's galleries are open to the pubic again with the exception of the film theatre.

Its exhibits include geological, natural and social history from the stone age until the present. Exhibitions include 'Near and Far' by Sarah Milteer, who uses postcards, vintage photographs, and family pictures to create paintings that combine personal and family history with her continuing experience exploring the Gairloch area’s distinct landscape. It runs from August 19 to September 12.

Then, from September 16 to October 31, Kittie Jones will bring 'Landscape and Memory' to the museum, which will explore the artist’s continuing love for and relationship with the sea.
