Maree Todd MSP has met with Lloyds Banking Group following the announcement last month that the group are to withdraw their Bank of Scotland branch in Alness.

Following the announcement, Maree Todd and the SNP Cromarty Firth branch launched a petition calling on the bank to revisit its decision. As of yesterday, the petition had gathered 406 signatures.

During the meeting with the MSP, the group confirmed that they intend to push ahead with the branch closure in July as planned.

The MSP said: “Whilst I’m disappointed that Lloyds Banking Group’s position has not changed, I had a constructive meeting with representatives yesterday, where I was assured of the group’s commitment to supporting customers as they transition away from traditional in-person banking at the branch to banking alternatives.

“I understand that Lloyds are currently in the process of contacting vulnerable customers and local businesses who use the Alness branch to have individual conversations with them about their options.

“I have received assurances that work is underway to ensure that most key banking functions will have suitable alternatives, which will not require travel to nearby branches in Dingwall and Tain. The Post Office, for instance, will play a significant role in maintaining local banking services, including both personal and business transactions to withdraw money.

“My concerns around financial exclusion still stand as I recognise that the alternatives offered may not be viable options for all of my constituents. I am eager to ensure that the banking needs of the community are met, and I have agreed to feedback any issues and concerns to Lloyds to see if there is scope to further improve services following the branch closure in July.

“Please do get in touch if you are impacted by the closure and I would be happy to raise this directly with Lloyds Banking Group.”
