DOZENS of children in the Highlands are waiting on an adoptive home.

And a Highland MSP has urged potential foster carers to step forward and help them in their heart-breaking plight.

It is understood that there are 30 children in the Highlands waiting on an adoptive home, as well as five waiting for a permanent foster family and 10 in need of a respite foster family.

Kate Forbes, the MSP for Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch, has now launched a campaign aimed at increasing the number of foster carers in the Highlands – in a bid to prevent children from being placed miles away from their home area.

“It breaks my heart that some of the littlest and most vulnerable of my constituents are sent miles and miles away because of lack of foster carers locally,” she said.

“The Highlands is one of the most welcoming places, with a big heart for hospitality.

“That should extend to those in the care system who, for whatever reason, cannot stay with their birth parents and need us to step up to the mark and care for them.

“There are, of course, many changes required but the first is for the people of our communities to see the need on their front doorstep.”

She added that she will be making further suggestions on how the number of foster carers in the Highlands could be increased in the coming weeks.
