TENANTS of Highland Council struggling as a result of the Covid crisis are being signposted to help on offer.

The council said that with the current lockdown restrictions, "more and more people are experiencing an impact on their finances and wellbeing".

Its Housing Tenant Participation team has produced a briefing advising tenants what housing services are available and where they can access help and support if they need it.

The briefing contains information on a wide range of topics.

These include:

energy advice, how to apply for help with fuel costs, details on changes to homelessness services, how to get housing support, support for anyone in rent arrears, information on what practical support is available in communities, contact details for the council’s Welfare Support Team, information on Covid-19 Self Isolation Support Grants and national helplines to help people to stay connected.

The briefing also gives a long list of key contact details for organisations and service providers.

Councillor Ben Thompson, chair of the Housing and Property Committee said: “As a landlord, the Council’s priority is maintaining the welfare of our tenants and providing people with essential services and advice at this difficult time.

“This briefing contains the most up-to-date information about where they can seek advice if they have any concerns about their wellbeing, income or other tenancy matters. Although the information on housing services is aimed specifically at Highland Council tenants the Help and Support information is useful for anyone.”

He added: “We do expect further guidance from the government over the coming weeks and our Tenant Participation team will be able to provide relevant information as and when we receive it.”
