A speed camera is to be installed on the road through Avoch after numerous complaints about speeding drivers.

The move has been welcomed by Black Isle constituency MSP Kate Forbes, who has dealt with constituents concerned about traffic on the Station Road and Toll Road stretch of the A832 – which passes Avoch Primary school, local shops and the harbour.

As well as a number of near misses, tragically a local father-of-two lost his life after being struck by a car on New Year’s Day in 2017.

The development comes as part of a targeted £675,000 investment at 24 different sites across Scotland’s road network by the Scottish Government.

Kate Forbes MSP said: “Since becoming the constituency MSP for the Black Isle, I have received a number of complaints from constituents living in Avoch about the number of vehicles flying through the village at dangerous speeds.

“The local community council have worked very hard to improve road safety in the village, and it beggars belief that a small minority of drivers choose to ignore the flashing speed signs and continue as if they were on a Formula One racing track.

“Against that backdrop I welcome the Scottish Government investment to make this mobile camera unit possible, though I also recognise it brings no consolation to families and friends who have been left completely devastated by the death of loved ones on Highland roads.

“In the past when resources have allowed, Police Scotland have occasionally been able to patrol the area with a mobile speed gun – and constituents tell me this has always been a very effective deterrent.

“With construction well underway at new housing developments in both Avoch and Rosemarkie, coupled with the area’s continued popularity with tourists, it would appear that traffic volume is only going to increase.

“I am confident this new mobile camera unit will help to improve road safety and will hopefully help encourage safe and responsible driving on the Black Isle.”
