A YELLOW weather warning for heavy rain has been extended in much of Ross-shire.

The Met Office has warned that the rain, which could be "persistent in places", could cause disruption in parts of Wester and Mid Ross. The only areas in Ross and Cromarty not covered by the alert are the Black Isle and parts of Easter Ross.

The alert will remain in place until 3pm today (Monday).

"Further rain, heavy and persistent in places, may lead to some disruption," said a Met Office spokesman.

"Flooding of a few homes and businesses is likely. Bus and train services [will] probably be affected, with journey times taking longer.

"Spray and flooding on roads will probably make journey times longer.

"Some interruption to power supplies and other services is likely."

As well as most of Ross-shire, the alert also covers parts of Skye, all of Sutherland, Caithness and most of Argyll and Bute, as well as Dumfries and Galloway, Glasgow, the Lake District and much of Lancashire.

A separate alert is also in place for western parts of Northern Ireland.
