Maryburgh gala day saw ‘big crowds’ to see event’s queen crowned
“Big crowds” were seen at Maryburgh’s annual gala day last weekend, which was jam-packed with activities and saw the official crowning of the gala queen.
Maryburgh Gala day, which took place on June 22, saw fourteen different stalls offering a range of delights including: crafts, patisserie, jewellery, plants, Maryburgers and even Loch Ness soaps.
The day also saw the official crowning of the gala queen, Eva McAnespie, alongside her attendants Lilly Rose and Amelia Shewan.
The royals of the gala were selected by names being picked from a hat, and Eva was chosen to be the queen. Local parents were then asked if there were any wee girls who would like to be an attendant for the day, and so Lilly and Amelia were put forward. A gala king was also due to partake, but unfortunately pulled out.
Gala queen Eva then went on to cut the ribbon to officially open the Maryburgh Gala Day.
Donald Stuart, chairperson of the Maryburgh Gala committee said: “Another great Gala with the weather making all the difference. A big crowd attended to see the gala queen and her attendants being crowned by Hannah from the Cottage Bar in Maryburgh.
“A big well done to the Gala Committee and volunteers making this a very successful day which provides the funds to keep the Maryburgh Amenities Centre open for the Communities use.”
The gala also included a bouncy castle for the kids, a display from Fyrish Gymnastics Club, football, hockey, Strathpeffer Pipe Band, a beetle drive and a Tea Dance for seniors in the community. For the first time in many years the event also saw the return of The Cottage Bar with lager, cider and wine on offer — which was warmly welcomed.
Peter Dingwall was host for the day, introducing performances from Highland dancers, Ness Factor winner Gregor Matheson, and many more.
