A LONG-serving minister of the Free Church in Ross-shire is moving to take up a charge in Inverness.

At a meeting of the Inverness, Lochaber and Ross Presbytery, the Rev Angus Macrae, a former Moderator of the Free Church of Scotland, accepted the call from the Free North in the city to become their new minister.

The Free North has been vacant since 2018 after the Rev Colin L. MacLeod moved on to serve in Gairloch.

Having spent nearly 20 years in Dingwall – he moved to serve the Free Church in Dingwall and Strathpeffer in 2001 – Mr Macrae stressed his love for the local community.

He said: “We are full of gratitude to God for his faithfulness and kindness to us over 19 years of ministry in Ross-shire. The Dingwall and Strathpeffer people will always be our family in Jesus. It is a healthy and loving community focused on pleasing God."

In 2018 Mr Macrae accepted the nomination of Moderator to the Free Church of Scotland and has also been chairman of the Board of Ministry for the past eight years.

He was born in Glasgow in 1967 but was raised and educated at Laxdale on the Isle of Lewis. He attended the Nicolson Institute in Stornoway then studied Divinity at Edinburgh University and the Free Church of Scotland College. He was ordained by the Free Church of Scotland in 1992, and originally served as minister of Kilwinning and Saltcoats in Ayrshire after which he moved to Dingwall and Strathpeffer Free Church in 2001.

It is expected that he will be inducted into the Free North some time in May.

Mr Macrae added: "We are excited to see what God will do next to encourage and bless his people in Dingwall and in Inverness. We have a clear sense of call from God to take up a new phase of ministry. We have much to learn, and so much to do but we look forward to getting to know and love a new church family. We expect to be stretched beyond our ability and can only lean on God’s grace for the challenges ahead.“

Mr Macrae is married to Ann, a doctor in Inverness, and they have three adult children.
