A PLANNING application has been lodged with Highland Council for 14 affordable houses for woodland near Lochcarron.

The application, for a site at Kirkton Woodland to be known as Kirkton Gardens, is made on behalf of Highland Council, the Highlands Small Community Housing Trust and the Lochcarron Community Development Company.

It is for two blocks of four one-and-a-half storey cottage flats with either one or two bedrooms and six semi-detached one storey houses - one four-bed, three three-bed and two two-bedroomed homes.

The applicant has also given notice of a separate application for four additional self build plots.

Kirkton Gardens is designed to be a new development, building on the architectural and planning traditions of the Highlands, it says. It aims to be a compact and diverse community, including affordable housing and self-build plots.

“The Kirkton Garden scheme is located on an area of greenfield land previously occupied by forestry. The site is principally a triangular plot surrounded by forestry to the north and west, and houses to the east and south of between one and two storeys.”

There will be 32 plots for new houses and flats.

Kirkton Gardens is designed to be a community which is of exceptional environmental and design quality. It is intended to both foster a sense of community, and encourage a more sustainable lifestyle, in which residents can enjoy the majority of their daily needs within walking distance, thereby reducing the dependence on, and the attraction of the car.

The masterplan proposes a neighbourhood, containing affordable housing and self-build plots that service the current amenities of Lochcarron and the surrounding area but also enhance the social and economic development of the Highlands.”
