AN insight into the operation of a fish feed mill which employs a number of people from Lochalsh is on offer in Kyleakin this weekend.

The team from Mowi’s feed mill at Kyleakin is to hold an open day on Saturday at Kyleakin Connections.

The event, running at the Old primary School from 10am until 1pm, is open to anybody interested in finding out more about the facility. The team from the feed mill will talk through the latest developments at the site and will also answer questions. For those wishing to have a tour of the mill, minibuses have been organised to take visitors there.

Claes Jonermark, operations director, Mowi Feed, said: “We really hope that people will take up the opportunity to come and see us. In August, we met residents living close to the feed mill in the Old Kyle Farm Road to discuss any concerns they had. November 9 is an opportunity to meet the wider community and explain more about the feed mill, where we are now and plans for the future. We’d love to give locals a better insight into what happens at the mill and how it is an important part of Mowi’s operations."

Those attending the open day will have the opportunity to hear a presentation from the management team at 10.30am, followed by a question and answer session.

Mowi’s "salmon wagon" will also be making its first visit to Skye to provide lunch to those attending and there will also be a chance to experience salmon farming in virtual reality for those that are keen to find out more.

Residents interested in finding out more about employment opportunities still available at the Feed Mill are also encouraged to attend.

The Norwegian seafood company, formerly known as Marine Harvest, is the largest salmon farming company in Scotland, employing over 1300 people. It was the first company in Scotland to farm Atlantic salmon.

The company has three hatcheries, five freshwater loch sites and 49 sea farms, situated in the Western Isles, Skye, Argyll, Wester Ross and Lochaber. Mowi holds the Royal Warrant for the supply of fresh farmed salmon to Her Majesty the Queen.

The venue of the open day is Kyleakin Connections, Old Primary School, Kyleakin, Isle of Skye.
