A Kyle lifeboat crew member is getting ready to tackle a mammoth challenge to give back to the charity next week.

Daniel Elliot, who has been a crew member with the Kyle RNLI team for three years, will be taking over his epic '9 peaks of Kintail' challenge on July 9, which will see him run 40km over nine Munros before cycling 25km back to the lifeboat station in just one day.

The bid is to raise vital funds for the lifesaving charity, and he has already smashed his target by around £400, by raising almost £3500 on his Just Giving Page.

"I am quite overwhelmed by the support really, I don't have a massive social media platform, and the fundraising part is the one that I was a bit more nervous about. I have had an amazing support so far so I am really grateful for that.

"I always feel confident but I am starting to get a bit nervous at this point!," he added. "Mowi Scotland and and Inverlussa Marine Services have donated a big amount of money, so seeing these big donations like these I am starting to feel the pressure a bit more!"

Mr Elliot, who picked up mountain biking and hill running during lockdown – the latter following his dad while his bike was being repaired – said he is almost ready for the challenge.

"I am pretty much ready," he said. "I am just starting to taper now. I have done a last run on Saturday evening and the rest of the training will be done on a bike.

"Mostly I need to get a few more miles in the legs to be ready, mostly I am focussing on not getting injured before next week! I am one of those people who is always on the run so I really need to try and get some proper rest before the challenge. I know the terrain, it's really rough and technical, if the weather is not good it will be pretty difficult."

On the fundraising initiative, he said: "I have always had in my head to push myself and raise some money for my local lifeboat. I am also a crew member and I saw how hard it was for the fundraising team to raise money during lockdown without being able to organise events. I thought I'd give something back and do this challenge."

Now upgraded to full crew member after a recent test, during the day Mr Elliot is an on-board chef at the navy base in Kyle.

On the day of the challenge he will be using social media to share his position. You will be able to follow his feat on his Facebook page.
