A much-loved convenience store in Kyle of Lochalsh has announced “difficult decision” to close the shop, citing spiralling costs and relocating to support family.

Kyle Mace Store and Post Office on Station Road has announced it will be closing — however they have stated that there are no plans for post office services to disappear from the village.

Rob Wilson, of Kyle Mace Store, said: “I have made the difficult decision to close my shop. This choice was not easy and has many facets to it — the spiralling costs associated with running a small business has certainly been a main one, but ultimately it’s one of love and responsibility.

“My mum has been living with Multiple Sclerosis for some time now, and unfortunately it is not the kind that is going to get any better as she gets older. Because of this, I have decided to relocate so that I can be closer to her and help support her more fully.”

Rob told Radio Skye that the Mace store would close in mid-July.

He continued: “Owning this shop has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, and I have met a lot of lovely people along the way — some not so lovely too. I am incredibly grateful to every customer, friend and support who has been part of this journey. Your kindness and loyalty has meant the world to me.”

Rob went on to explain that the Post office will likely move to a temporary service with more updates coming in due course, adding that “one thing is for sure, there will still be post office services available in Kyle!”

Dozens of the shop’s customers took to social media to share their thoughts.

Vicki Clark said: “Your shop was a lifeline back when I worked at the Practice, and dropped in most days. You’ve given so much to this community, both through the shop and previously as a firefighter.”

Dawn MacAskill commented: “Wishing your mum, you and your family every good health and happiness for the future. You have served us all in Lochalsh and Skye with a wonderful, friendly service.”

Margaret-Ann Matheson stated: “Thank you for everything you have done, you are a pillar in the community and will be hugely missed. You are doing what is right for you and your family, and that’s what truly matters in life.”

Post Office was contacted for comment.
