Kyle father-of-two taking on 260km cycle challenge for fire fighters
A KYLE man is set to cycle to seven Wester Ross fire stations in one day, in order to raise money for a charity supporting the life-saving service.
Father of two, Daniel Elliot (34) balances his volunteer work with the Kyle RNLI and the Kyle Fire Service, and his job as a cook on the Merchant Navy. On top of his many roles, he is now taking on a mammoth fundraising challenge for the Fire Fighters Charity, by visiting several fire stations in one day.
On August 16, Daniel will be visiting fire stations in Lochcarron, Applecross, Torridon, Kinlochewe, Glenelg, Broadford and Kyle of Lochalsh. He will cover a distance of 260km and over 16,000 feet of elevation, by cycling the likes of Bealach na Bà, Mam Ratagan Pass and Kylerhea.
Daniel said: “I am a retained fire fighter in Kyle, and the Fire Fighters Charity is there for supporting fire fighters and their families if they become injured or, worst case scenario, lost in service.
“We lost a few fire fighters in the UK a couple of months ago, so it sprung to mind to do something for the charity.
“It’s a very rewarding job, all the guys I work with at the station are great. For anyone who’s thinking of doing it, I would definitely push them to go for it. It’s a big tie, but you get into the rhythm of living like that.”
So far, the Kyle man has raised £675 for the charity.
Daniel continued: “I’m hoping to complete the cycle in 12 hours… but we will have to see how it goes!”
