TRIBUTE has been paid following the tragic discovery of the body of a Ross-shire man who had been posted missing two months ago.

Police confirmed this week that a body found on a beach at Dingieshowe, Orkney was that of John Mackay (51) who had been reported missing two months ago.

The Muir of Ord native, who later moved to Inverness, had been a member of the local golf club for around 40 years.

Muir of Ord Golf Club manager John Forbes said: "It was very sad to hear of John's passing. Personally I knew John from when I was a junior member here and he was one of the guys that we would look up to. He was a five-time club champion and was also a member of the Muir of Ord Golf Club team who won the Northern Counties in 1986 and 1987, which was a huge achievement at the time.

"He also won the Scottish Left Handed Championships eight times. John will be hugely missed by his friends and fellow members at Muir of Ord Golf Club."

Police said they had informed Mr Mackay's family and a report has been sent to the procurator fiscal's office.
