Fiscal depute Victoria Silver told Sheriff Sara Matheson that the 44-year-old had split up with his ex-partner just a few months earlier.
"He went to his partner's parents house and he was heard to threaten to batter his new partner," she said.
Defending, Clare Russell said: "The complainer had had an affair. They unexpectedly had an encounter at a friend's house and his ex-partner and his new partner laughed at him.
"He followed them to the parents' house and he made a foolish comment. He should have known better."
