KLM is cancelling its Inverness to Amsterdam service until next year.

The Highlands' direct airlink with Amsterdam is to be suspended until next year, following a decision by Dutch national airline KLM to reduce the number of UK services over winter.

Inverness Airport, along with Cardiff, Southampton and Teeside airports will see flights to Amsterdam's Schipol Airport put on hold until February 2021.

KLM UK announced the decision on social media, commenting: “In an ever changing world, in agreement with our airport partner friends, we have made the difficult decision to temporarily suspend services from these airports.

“We’re already planning our return, and services are set to resume mid-February.”

The service is scheduled to return on February 11, but will continue to offer flights to Amsterdam from 13 UK airports, including Aberdeen.

KLM introduced its Inverness service in May 2016 and last year increased the service to three flights per day six days a week to meet demand.

As well as serving the Netherlands' biggest city, Schipol is one of Europe's busiest air hubs for longer haul flights.
