A man has been spared jail after stealing around £400 worth of alcohol during two brazen blitzes on the same supermarket.

Zen Etchells (27) appeared from custody at Inverness Sheriff Court where he admitted the thefts which took place earlier this year.

Etchells, of Station Road, Fortrose, first stole from the Aldi on Friar’s Bridge, Inverness on March 25, making off with £196 worth of spirits.

The court heard the haul included multiple bottles of vodka, rum and whisky.

He was seen on CCTV putting the alcohol in a basket then transferring it to his rucksack and leaving the store without paying.

He returned to the same store on April 16 and repeated his earlier crime – this time with a stash of £200 worth of drink.

Etchells was placed on a community payback order with a 12-month supervision element as a direct alternative to jail.
