INVERGORDON fish feed firm Skretting is closing its Inverbreakie Industrial Estate base at the end of the month, the company has announced.

Confirmation of the date comes just months after the firm first announced the closure of the site, with the loss of 51 jobs.

The firm’s general manager John Williamson said Skretting will “cease all manufacturing activities in the UK on the April 30 with the result that all 51 roles at our Invergordon factory will become redundant. We are currently looking at various options for the plant and are working closely with Highlands and Islands Enterprise.

“Supporting our staff during this difficult period is important and we have hosted a recent job fair with a number of local employers attending and will continue to provide outplacement support for our employees.”

Cromarty Firth councillor Maxine Smith said: “It is so disappointing that the Skretting owners decided to pull out of Scotland and the UK and close its plants, paying off many loyal workers.

"I do hope that some take comfort from the future work that will come to the base via the Port Authority and that firms like Carbon Dynamic are starting to grow again. There are no words to comfort people though, that find themselves without gainful employment.

"My thoughts are with them and their families and I hope they find something very soon.”
