Barbaraville home's 'caring atmosphere' praised by inspectors after visit

AN Easter Ross care home that looks after up to 42 older people has received a good all-round report from inspectors.

Inspectors found that Mull Hall Care Home, in Barbaraville near Invergordon, has pleasant grounds, very well maintained and easy to access by people who live there.

The aims of the service include “to deliver quality care services, meeting all your assessed needs in relation to accommodation, meals, activities, support and care in accordance with the relevant Care Standards, whilst preserving and maintaining the independence, safety, dignity and individual rights of the resident.”

In evaluating quality, the Care Inspectorate used a six-point scale where one is unsatisfactory and six is excellent. They found that Mull Hall scored four, or ‘good’, for support of people’s wellbeing, leadership, staffing and the home’s setting.

A score of five, or ‘very good’. was achieved for how well is Mull Hall resident’s care and support planned.

Inspectors issued questionnaires and received five back from people experiencing care and 11 from relatives. With the exception of one person who did not respond, everyone who returned completed questionnaires agreed or strongly agreed that overall they were happy with the quality of care they or their relative/friend receives.

Inspectors spoke to 12 people experiencing care and four relatives, and the majority of views were positive.

Assessing the staff, the inspectors said: “There were a number of important strengths which taken together, clearly outweighed areas for improvement. The strengths had a significant positive impact on people’s experiences and outcomes. Improvements are needed to maximise wellbeing and ensure that people consistently have experience and outcomes which are as positive as possible.

“People’s needs should be met by the right number of staff at the right time. There had been a high turnover of staff and a period of instability since the last inspection. There was a good team approach between management of care and ancillary staff.

“Although staff were busy there was a calm atmosphere and people benefited from a warm caring atmosphere. Staff worked well together and were aware of their roles and responsibilities. Additional staff had been recruited and a small bank of staff had been established to help cover periods of sickness.

It added: “Management and staff had been working hard to improve and provide good care to people.”
