Hundreds of residents living in dozens of homes in part of Wester Ross were without electricity on Christmas Eve morning after a fault on the power grid.

The fault, which occurred at 8.42am, affected at least 83 homes in communities dotted around the southern and eastern shores of Loch Ewe - including Poolewe and Aultbea.

A spokesperson for Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) said: "We're aware of a power cut in the area affecting 83 homes.

"This unplanned fault is affecting a large area, and it's likely several streets in you area are affected by the same power cut."

It is understood the fault is affecting the overhead network.

As the time of writing, SSEN was projecting a power restoration time of midday on Christmas Eve.

However, engineers were not yet on site to assess the nature of the fault or repair, and were "busy on another fault", so this projected time could slip back.

The spokesperson continued: "Engineers are aware of the fault but are busy on another fault. Once they have restored power on the other fault, or if another team become available in the meantime, they will be sent straight to your area to get the power back on.

"At this stage, we're aiming to have your power restored by midday on Christmas Eve."
