HOLLYWOOD actress Karen Gillan has scooped $5000 for the Inverness suicide prevention charity Mikeysline after taking part in a superhero fantasy football league along with fellow celebrities.

The Inverness-born actress, who has previously promoted the charity's work, joined the league created by American film and TV directors Anthony and Joseph Russo and their film production company AGBO.

The 14 league members, including 12 actors in superhero films, competed for $100,000 to be split among their chosen charities.

The overall winner was Australian actor Chris Hemsworth, who starred as Thor in several movies – some including Ms Gillan as Nebula. He won $19,000 for the Australian Childhood Foundation.

Fifth-placed Ms Gillan has given her winnings – the equivalent of about £3865 – to Mikeysline and the Hive Project in Academy Street which provide a drop-in sanctuary for people seeking help for mental health issues.

Ms Gillan has been a keen supporter of the charity in recent years, raising its profile among a global audience.

Donna Smith, chairwoman of Mikeysline, was delighted that Ms Gillan had once again shown her support for the charity and continued to raise its profile.

"We were very excited when we first heard that Karen had decided to take part in the AGBO charity league and that she was competing on behalf of Mikeysline, once again putting us on the Hollywood map," she said.

"To now know that she went on to do so well and win $5000 for us is absolutely fantastic and we can't thank Karen enough for her continued support. This money will go to great use supporting the operation of our drop-in centre."
