A Highland shinty club has announced the death of one of its stalwarts regarded by many as a "true gentleman".

Beauly Shinty Club said it was "truly saddened" to announce the passing of club legend David 'Murph' Maclean, former player, committee member, serving vice chieftain and so much more to all at Beauly.

On a post on social media, it said: "Murph who had been in indifferent health in recent times passed away in the loving care of Strathallan House, Strathpeffer, peacefully with his family at his side.

"The club would like to extend our deepest sympathies to Stephen, Rosalind, David and Kirsty, Louise and Chris along with the rest of the extended Maclean family as they come to terms with their loss.

"A fuller tribute to Murph will hopefully follow in the next few days along with any funeral arrangements when known."

Heartfelt tributes have poured in from the local community as well as other shinty clubs in the area.

Lovat Shinty Club posted: "Everyone at Lovat are heartbroken to hear this awful news! He was a legend of Beauly and will be forever missed."

Newtonmore Camanachd Club said it was greatly saddened. "Sending our deepest condolences to the Maclean family and all at Beauly."

Many described him as a "true gentleman" including Roddie MacLennan who reflected: "A true gentleman with green blood in his veins and a truly sad loss to Beauly and those who knew and respected him. Most sincere condolences to all the family."

Conor Cormack said: "So sorry to hear this. Old Murph was an absolute gent and never missed a game. Even went over to Ireland to watch us."

Steven Christison posted: "A club stalwart, legend and a great man. Many positive memories from my youth."
