THE price of school meals will rise from next month, Highland Council announced today (Monday).

When pupils return from the Easter holidays on April 22 and the new spring-summer menu starts, the price of a primary school two-course traditional lunch will increase by 8p to £1.95 and for secondary schools by 7p to £2.15.

Highland Council says its aim is to make sure that all families are given every opportunity to ensure that their children can eat nutritional and well-balanced meals at school.

A range of online payments and cashless catering systems are in place to ensure anonymity for pupils receiving free school meals and to improve queuing and service as well as making it easier to pay.

According to the council, quality ingredients are carefully sourced for Highland school meals including local supplies of beef, lamb, venison, salmon, free range eggs, and organic carrots. Seasonal local fresh fruit and vegetables are supplied as much as possible.
