Following a series of successful summer camps Inverness Ice Centre is planning to hold an open day this month.

There is already interest in next year’s events and the open day will be held this Saturday.

Gordon Barron, the centre’s chief executive, said: “We are over the moon with the success of the camps and the feedback has been just amazing.

“There has been positive social media comment about the programme and content, quality of the facilities, ice, coaching and catering and the beauty of Inverness and the Highlands.”

He said participants and coaches had praised the summer camps and they were already looking forward to their return next year, adding: “The centre and the coaches are now in consultation and have already started planning for next year.”

The winter season relaunch open day will feature a number of top curlers during a demonstration of the sport including Ewan MacDonald – the most decorated curler to come out of Inverness who has won a staggering three world championships, two European championships and one European mixed championship.

In addition, Moray’s Jim Gault and Gregor Ewan, two of the 2014 Paralympic bronze medallists from wheelchair curling, will also be there.

Mr Barron said: “Our open day will be a fantastic day for all the family and all ages.

“We will have free tea, coffee and biscuits for all, and a chance for the public and facility users to view our updated and recently refurbished bar/lounge area.

“There will be time to chat to representatives from all our ice sports for a better understanding of what sports are available at the ice centre, how to get involved and progress and what plans we have for future development events and new programmes.”

During the day there will be demonstrations of curling, from 10am-noon, ice skating, from 1pm-3pm, as well as two exhibition matches for junior and senior ice hockey from 4pm-6pm.
