Highland Tourism Community Interest Company (CIC) has grown its range of tourism ambassadors with the addition of Bunloit Estate near Loch Ness, owned by award-winning entrepreneur, writer and climate campaigner, Jeremy Leggett.

Mr Leggett created the Bunloit Rewilding project in March 2020 and he founded Solarcentury, one of the world’s most respected solar energy companies, winner of a Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Innovation.

He also founded SolarAid, an international charity, set up with a levy on annual Solarcentury profits, and a winner of a BITC Unilever Global Development Award.

Mr Leggett has previously been named entrepreneur of the year at the New Energy Awards, was the first Hillary Laureate for International Leadership in Climate Change, and was the first non-Dutch winner of a Royal Dutch Honorary Sustainability Award.

Mr Leggett said: “Bunloit Rewilding is delighted to be a Highland Tourism ambassador. Our company purpose is to enable nature recovery and community prosperity through rewilding, and we believe that there is huge potential for this in the Highlands.

“Tackling the climate and biodiversity crises presents an opportunity for a much better way of life, not a challenge of giving things up as some may think.

“Nature-based solutions, and a greener economy, will create many more jobs and enterprise opportunities. For example, a sector that can thrive while protecting the planet, is tourism.

“Sustainable tourism, that works towards net zero and is conscious of its impact on the environment and local communities, will build resilience into the Highland tourism industry, ensuring that it benefits the economy, communities, and the planet well into the future. We very much support Highland Tourism’s sustainable vision.”

Yvonne Crook, Highland Tourism CIC co-founder and chairwoman, said: “Jeremy’s track record for entrepreneurship and sustainability is outstanding. We are delighted to be adding the Bunloit Estate and Jeremy’s skills to our range of talented ambassadors.

“Sustainable tourism and a clear strategy for conscious travel to the Highlands is vital, both for tourism businesses and for the environment.

“This is another significant milestone in the growth of Highland Tourism and gives us a further boost as we prepare for 2022, when we will have more good news to share.”
